The Dark Side of Digitalisation: The Negative Impacts of Technology on Well-Being and Competence

Digital technology has rapidly transformed our daily lives. While these advances promote some levels of convenience, they also introduce several issues related to well-being and competence. This talk explores the negative side of digitalisation, including digital addiction, AI overreliance, technostress, disorders, tiredness, and cognitive debt. It also provides prevention strategies for these issues. The discussion concludes by calling for a more balanced approach to technology use, encouraging mindfulness, digital awareness, and healthier ways of living in the digital age.

Biography
Oscar Karnalim is an associate professor and the dean of the Faculty of Smart Technology and Engineering at Maranatha Christian University, Indonesia. He completed his PhD at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He serves as Editor in Chief of Sage’s Journal of Educational Technology Systems and as an editorial board member of four Scopus-indexed journals. His research interests include social computer science, software engineering, and artificial intelligence. Oscar has published over 120 academic papers with more than 1,400 citations. His Google Scholar H-Index is 21, while his Scopus H-Index is 16. Wakefulness-Maintaining Rest During Autonomous Driving Utilising the Physiological Mechanisms of Hemispheric Sleep

With the advancement of autonomous driving technology, drivers are increasingly freed from continuous driving tasks, entering a phase where the nature of fatigue recovery and rest during driving is being redefined. Conversely, transitioning into deep sleep states poses risks to safety by causing reaction delays and sleep inertia during emergency takeover operations. This presentation focuses on the physiological strategy of “unihemispheric sleep” employed by migratory birds and marine mammals, where they alternately rest one cerebral hemisphere during flight or swimming. It proposes “Active Rest” as a novel rest concept applied to human driver states, aiming to maintain alertness. Active Rest is defined as an intermediate physiological state that reduces fatigue while maintaining alertness levels without complete loss of consciousness. This research discusses detection metrics based on physiological signals targeting this Active Rest state, and the design of algorithms to induce and control state transitions. Specifically, it aims to balance safety and rest efficiency through applications in driver monitoring using metrics such as heart rate variability, respiration, and alertness indicators. Looking ahead, this presentation introduces the construction of an adaptive rest algorithm integrating peripheral traffic risk information within a V2X environment with the driver's physiological state. It explores prospects for vital feedback control and optimisation of the human-machine interface (HMI) according to risk levels.

Biography
Emi Yuda was born in Tokyo, Japan. After serving as an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering and an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Information Sciences at Tohoku University, she was appointed Professor at the Innovation Center for Semiconductor and Digital Future and the Graduate School of Engineering (Department of Information Engineering) at Mie University in 2024. Her research focuses on biological signal processing and biological big data analysis. Her work spans a wide spectrum, from fundamental research on the mechanisms of biological fluctuations and brain-heart interactions to applied research through industry-academic collaborations. She also holds positions as a Specially Appointed Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University (Cross-appointment) and a Visiting Professor at the Chitose Institute of Science and Technology.
